Community Organizing

MAHA began the Homebuyers Union – a grassroots group made up of low- and moderate-income tenants who wanted to become homeowners in 1988. Since then, MAHA and the Homebuyers Union has worked with banks, insurance companies, and elected officials around the issues of affordable homeownership, increased investment in lower income neighborhoods, and improved quality of life for lower income residents. MAHA’s community organizing was key in the creation of the ONE Mortgage program (formerly the SoftSecond program). Today, MAHA along with hundreds of Homebuyer Union members advocate for more funding for affordable homeownership programs so that more people across Massachusetts can access homeownership. Take action with MAHA to ensure that homeownership is accessible to all!

It's election season in the city of Boston!

Elections decide who will fight for you, your neighborhood, and the right to a truly affordable home in Boston. When we vote, we're choosing who shapes the future of housing, opportunity, and justice in our city. Your vote shows elected officials that we matter. It's how we make sure they see us, hear us, and deliver on their commitments to us.

Affordable homeownership in Boston is on the line -- remember, your vote is your power! Read below for information on how to make your voting plan.

Read About the Commitments MAHA Received from Mayoral & At-Large City Councilor Candidates

During MAHA's Community Action for Homeownership on July 15th, we asked mayoral candidates Mayor Michelle Wu and Josh Kraft for their commitments to fund homeownership programs and build affordable homes if they are elected in the November. MAHA volunteer leaders first asked the candidates to state whether they would ensure adequate funding for ONE+Boston, the city's deeply discounted mortgage program; and STASH First-Gen Home, MAHA's downpayment assistance program for first-generation homebuyers. They also asked the candidates to commit to new construction of affordable homeownership housing. During the follow up Community Action for Homeownership on August 7th, live on Zoom, we asked mayoral candidate Domingos DaRosa for his commitments to the same series of questions.

MAHA also collected answers to the same questions from Boston's at-large city councilor candidates. Check out their answers to the questions below to get a good understanding of where the candidates stand on affordable homeownership and housing.
