Frequently Asked Questions
Why is MAHA undertaking this project?
We need more space, pure and simple. We need a home that will accommodate our future growth. We need a home with classrooms large enough to welcome rather than challenge those who use them. We need a home that encourages our dreams instead of hindering them.
How will this project help to advance MAHA's Mission?
Since 1991, over 12,000 people have come through our doors to take advantage of a growing number of home-related educational opportunities. The growth in our programs over the years has necessitated a growth in our teaching, counseling and organizing personnel. To help even more people realize their dreams of homeownership, our physical space must keep pace with the demand for our programs.
How will MAHA's constituencies benefit from the new building?
We will be better able to handle the thousands of homebuyers and homeowners we serve each year through our classes and programs. Our counselors will have space in which to teach and counsel that doesn't double as a kitchen. Our graduates will have one-on-one meeting rooms so they can feel free discussing private financial matters. Our organizers will have a community meeting facility that can hold 100 people. We will be able to dedicate space to our staff (which has grown from 3 to 11), and for our growing volunteer base.
What are the goals of the campaign?
MAHA needs to raise more than $3.5 million dollars to fully fund the Capital Campaign and provide a new home from which we can make affordable housing a reality in Massachusetts.
Where is the money expected to come from?
MAHA began this phase of campaign with $812,000. We expect approximately 40% to come from corporations and another 30% from foundations. Government sources totaling 20% will round out the bulk of campaign funding with another 10% coming from individual solicitations.
Why build when there is so much office space available?
MAHA's search for a new home began in 2001. We formed a building committee representative of the organization and our constituents, and embarked on what became a three-year search for appropriate office and classroom space. Satisfied that no suitable space was available for purchase, MAHA decided to build.
As part of the campaign, are there any naming opportunities?
Our Capital Campaign Committees and MAHA Board are currently assembling a list of potential naming opportunities within the new building. As soon as the list is approved we will make it available here.
